Editor's notes

In this lesson I'll prove how to play the outlaw country fingerstyle groove of "Sleeping on the Blacktop" past Colter Wall. This is a straightforward, stripped downwards, and raw sequence that cycles betwixt two sections: (1) a subdued repeating walk-down which builds upwardly tension; and (ii) an unleashed chorus-like drop that releases all the energy. I'll teach y'all the chords (with tabs), explicate the Travis picking technique, and talk through how to do the unlike phrases heard throughout this sequence. This makes for a nifty warmup exercise, fifty-fifty if you're not familiar with Colter Wall or this vocal in its full class.

Video timestamps:

  • 0:00 Playthrough & overview
  • ii:13 Chord shapes needed
  • half dozen:04 Part one: Walk down
  • 9:21 Office 2: Master riff
  • 16:21 Farewell

Capo and tuning notes

Take notation that I'chiliad playing this in standard tuning and without a capo. Colter Wall plays this song with a capo on the 2nd fret while tuned down one whole stride… but I'm going to keep it straightforward and uncomplicated for now. If yous'd like to eventually run into a full lesson for this unabridged song, let me know… I might get to it one day. In the meanwhile, I trust this will practice you good. Best of luck!

Other suggested videos

Hither's a neat solo acoustic performance past Colter Wall – I detect these sorts of clips super helpful just to sentry how he plays information technology.

Here'south a clip from Hell or High H2o, a really nifty 2016 moving-picture show that uses the album verison of this song. I can't recommend this movie enough! Good stuff.
