Lab: Plate Boundaries And Movement

Pre-Lab Information

Purpose To observe how convection moves Earth'due south plates and how plate boundaries are formed

Time Approximately 2 45-minute periods

Question What effect does plate movement have on geologic events and structures on Globe's

surface?

Summary In this lab, you will find a model that shows how convection currents work. You will

relate your observations to the processes that bulldoze plate tectonics. You will also create a

model for the different types of plate boundaries caused by the interaction of plates to

sympathize how plate tectonics canorthward modify the shape of Globe'south surface.

Lab Procedure

Footstep ane: Prepare for the project.

a) Read through this guide before you begin, so y'all know the expectations for this lab.

b) If anything is not clear to you, be sure to ask your teacher.

Stride 2: Open the virtual lab.

Step 3: Prepare the convection model.

a) Drag the beaker to the tank to fill the tank with cool water.

b) Select the "Continue" button to continue.

c) Elevate the pieces of paper to the surface of the h2o.

d) Drop them onto the surface of the water.

due east) Go on to the next part of this experiment.

Pace 4: Observe the motility of the food coloring and paper.

a) Drag the food coloring to the centre of the tank.

b) Select the "Keep" push button to proceed.

c) Find what happens to the food coloring and pieces of newspaper for iii minutes. Use the top

view and side view buttons to seeast unlike views of the tank. Note that the inorth-plan timer

will become faster than the actual fourth dimension. Also, you volition be able to reset the timer by selecting the

"Replay" button to come across the animation again.

i) Every 30 seconds, record any changes in the beliefs of the nutrient coloring in Table A in

the Data department of this guide. Use the side view to go a improve view of theastward behavior of

food coloring.

ii) Every 30 seconds, record any changes in the behavior of the pieces of paper in Table A

in the Data section of this guide.

d) Proceed to the next part of this experiment.

Step v: Detect how convection moves pieces of newspaper.

a) Drag the loving cup of hot water and place it nether the container, just beneath the food coloring.

b) Select the "Go along" push to proceed.
